Cefspan is a Cephalosporin and FDA has included all the cephalosporin antibiotics in pregnancy category “C”. However, up to 400 times of the standard recommended dose (for adult human) was given to mice for reproductive studies. This research has revealed no harm to the fetus due to Cefspan.
It is important to note that animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response. So we strongly recommend, do not take Cefspan unless clearly needed. Moreover, it is not confirmed whether Cefspan (cefixime) is extreted in human milk. As a precaution, we suggest discontinuing breastfeeding (lactation) during the treatment with Cefspan.
