According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, almost 7 million Americans suffer from excessive sweating. Let’s delve into some of the social consequences as Hyperhidrosis can affect every aspect of a person’s life – their relationships, work, school, and social activities. Those who suffer from excessive underarm sweating also have to be concerned with body odor. Body odor is not caused by more sweat glands in the armpit, but rather by the lack of evaporation in that area so the sweat cannot dissipate as easily.
Excessive underarm sweating can be more embarrassing than any of us can imagine if we do not suffer from it. As I mentioned in my previous post, many people with this condition have to change their shirt several times a day. This would preclude several work environments, many social activities, and/or family gatherings, as well as be a nightmare for the person who is on a date. Then you have to consider the cost of ruined clothing and/or expensive dry cleaning on a constant basis. Some people are so traumatized by this experience that they cannot work at all and lock themselves up in their home, not knowing there is help for them.
The person suffering from excessive sweating may have a great personality and be really talented in a given field. But just the fear of an incident with Hyperhidrosis can lead such a person to become socially isolated. They might develop low self-esteem and begin to be afraid of rejection in all social situations. Now their life is even more complicated than the sweating issue. Then consider that a lot of this begins with puberty and you have even more disturbing social consequences for both boys and girls. A teenager might refrain from competitive team sports (even though they might be talented enough to earn a scholarship) because of their embarrassment with their excessive sweating. All adolescents are hyper sensitive to anything that might be embarrassing. Imagine if they are constantly worried about whether they will start sweating excessively or not. We also know how teenagers can harass and embarrass each other. In this age of bullying and teen suicide, parents need to be acutely aware of their teen’s response if they have this condition. Constant ridicule could have long-term adverse consequences for the individual with excessive sweating. This alone may be reason enough to do something to cure it.
