Possible Side Effects of Blephamide

  • All eye drops having a corticosteroid may cause an increase in the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) in some cases, which include most of those with a family history of glaucoma. Therefore such patients must get their IOP checked periodically when using Blephamide Eye Drops or a similar preparation.
  • Prolonged or intensive use of Blephamide Eye Drops may lead to the development of cataract.
  • Topical steroids when in diseases causing thinning of cornea or sclera, may lead to perforation of the globe.
  • Extensive or prolonged use of topical steroids should be avoided during pregnancy.
  • When persistent corneal ulceration is treated with steroids, fungal invasion may be suspected.
  • In case of insignificant response even after 3-4 days, additional systemic or conjunctival therapy may be needed.
