Lukast (montelukast sodium) is one of the most widely prescribed medicine for Asthma in many countries across the world. It acts through selective inhibition of cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLT1) receptors. Cysteinyl leukotrienes, arachidonic acid metabolites, play an important part in the pathogenesis of asthma. Lukast is indicated in children and adults in the following conditions;
Lukast Indications
- Prophylaxis of acute exacerbation of asthma
- Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction
- Treatment of aspirin-sensitive asthma
Lukast (montelukast sodium) is used for the prophylaxis of asthma. It is not recommended for the treatment of acute exacerbation. Therefore rescue medication should be available during the therapy with Lukast. However, the therapy may be continued during the acute exacerbation.
Lukast Dosage and Administration
- Children 2-5 years of age
One 4mg chewable tablet to be taken in the evening. - Children 6-15 years of age
One 5mg chewable tablet to be taken in the evening. - Adults more than 15 years of age
One 10mg tablet to be taken in the evening.
Lukast Side Effects
Lukast (montelukast sodium) is generally well-tolerated but some patients may experience the following side effects;
- Diarrhea
- Pharyngitis
- Laryngitis
- Nausea
- Otitis
- Sinusitis
- viral infections
- Abdominal Pain and Headache
Use in Pregnancy And Lactation
Since there are no well-controlled studies available in pregnancy. Lukast should be prescribed to pregnant women only if clearly indicated. Moreover, it is not known whether (montelukast sodium) is secreted in human breast milk, therefore caution should be applied while prescribing this drug to nursing mother.
Note: Safety and efficacy of Lukast remains unchanged in elderly patients.
