Eating lunch at school is a tradition that started in the second half of the 19th century. Before this time, most kids went to school or work very close to home, and they would simply travel back home to eat a large mid-day meal with their families. But in the latter part of the 19th century, people began traveling farther and farther to get to work and school, and they had to eat out as there was not enough time to travel and eat during the mid-day break. This led to cafeteria-style dining halls that provided very basic food choices to kids. These early cafeterias typically offered only one choice, and kids had to either eat it or go hungry. Food quality wasn’t always very high either, and many of these cafeteria meals were quite unappealing. Many kids began to pack their own lunches, bringing with them their favorite foods from home. Processed Foods are Becoming Less Desirable
Bringing foods from home typically meant foods that were eaten at lunch were less fresh and more processed than home-cooked meals. In the latter part of the 20th century, many processed foods were created specifically for children’s bagged lunches. But these foods were not terribly healthy or nutritious, and as people continue to become more health conscious, these processed foods are becoming less desirable. Fresh, whole food options are starting to become more and more popular in kid’s lunch bags, as are creative, bright, and festive preparations that make healthy foods more desirable. While cafeteria programs have also increased in quality’ and variety, there still is nothing quite like a delicious meal packed from home with mom’s loving touch. Millions of kids enjoy bagged lunches each day, and the trend only continues to grow.
