How to get rid of Bacterial VaginosisBacterial vaginosis (BV) is an inflammation in the vagina caused by an overgrowth of a type of bacteria. Any woman of childbearing age from 15 to 45 years can get Bacterial vaginosis. However, studies show that it can also be found on women of all ages including pregnant women. The National Health Service (NHS) found that 12-30 percent of adult women and 20 percent of pregnant women in the UK carry Bacterial vaginosis. Meanwhile, 16 percent of women are affected according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in US.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) also conducted a research in the US by collecting self-collected vaginal swabs from more than three thousand seven hundred women. They found that approximately 29 percent of women aging from 14 to 49 years are affected by BV and half of them are African-American. One of out of three women can develop Bacterial vaginosis during their lifetime.

What are the causes of Bacterial Vaginosis?

Getting BV is still not clear but studies show that women can get Bacterial vaginosis through any of the following:

  • Vaginal deodorants
  • Scented soaps or bubble baths
  • Intrauterine device (IUD) inserted in the vagina
  • Coils for contraception
  • Vaginal douching or cleaning out the vagina

Contrary to the beliefs, women may not get BV from toilet seats, swimming pools or beddings.

Bacterial Vaginosis is not a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)

Women who are not sexually active can also get BV, concluding that it is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI). However, more than 70 percent of sexually active women are diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis.

Women who have BV can pass it to another woman they had sex with. Men, on the other hand, are not affected but they can also pass it to their other female sex partners. In fact, more than 80% of men carry Bacterial vaginosis.
